Carys Phillips plays as a hooker for the Worcester Warriors in the Premier 15s and for Wales. A daughter of former Welsh great, Rowland Phillips, she answered our questions on her rugby career to date.
Following in your father's footsteps as a Welsh international, what is your earliest rugby memory?
Going to the Gnoll rugby ground with my dad and brother, catching cross field kicks to score in the corner. Such fun times.
You have captained Wales, Represented your country at a World Cup. Have you a career highlight to date?
The highlight for me was beating Ireland at the Ireland World Cup in 2017, this qualified us for the next one in New Zealand.
What are your rugby goals for 2025?
To always love the sport, always play happy and to enjoy and relish all the amazing opportunities I get with this amazing sport. I feel I always play my best and have the best impacts when I love what I do.
Have you noticed any drastic improvements of the women’s game in the last few years?
The growth of the international game - 100%. But more so the growth of the club game. I recently played for Quins against Bristol in front of a record crowd at The Stoop and the atmosphere was unbelievable, the crowds were amazing!
Have you always worn headgear. What made you choose N-Pro in particular?
Yes, I have always worn headgear to play, and I changed to N-Pro around 3 years ago. I love my N-Pro head-guard, it’s comfortable, the material is great and it gives me so much confidence playing. Also got the red strip for Wales!
What's the best coaching advise you've ever received whether on or off pitch?
Control the controllables
What advice would you give to any young athlete who may have aspirations to be a professional rugby player?
Work hard and absolutely love what you do!
